Thesis Magazine, 2013 issue: The Experiments

The experiments for the thesis revolved around the natural interaction with virtual spaces and the elements its made up of. I designed 3 tests, based on a set of guidelines utilising the kinect, which are as follows:

Cognitive test: Navigating through a game space using our body.

Affective test: Experiment to see how our emotions [facial expressions] affect a virtual space, using face tracking.

Psychomotor test: Manipulating virtual objects with the hands, instead of the usual mouse and keyboard.

Kinect Sculpture

The Kinetic Sculpture is a metaphorical translation of the process of form-finding in art and design.
714 metal spheres, hanging from thin steel wires attached to individually-controlled stepper motors and covering the area of six square meters, animate a seven minute long mechatronic narrative. In the beginning, moving chaotically, then evolving to several competing forms that eventually resolve to the finished object, the kinetic sculpture creates an artistic visualisation of the process of form-finding in different variations.

Chronogram beta

Chronogram mapping the route the character will navigate through the game. With the scene starting in the Actual Park, the student moulds a virtual space using the restrictions  of the actual space: re-imagining the environment, the character travels through the virtual park, by JASON and in Neo Dreadnought picking up the first part of the Diploma. Last scene is of Virtual Painted Hall, picking up the last part of the Diploma ends the game.
